What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is an innovative fat reduction procedure that utilizes controlled and targeted cooling to gently and effectively reduce fat cells from a specific area on the body that carries excess fat. Fat cells are most sensitive to cold and with targeted freezing, they can be selectively eliminated without damaging surrounding tissue. The revolutionary technology of CoolSculpting does just this – it solely targets fat cells under the skin’s surface using precision-cooling to irreparably damage and eliminate these fat cells through cryo-lipolysis.

The fat cells treated by CoolSculpting are then gradually and naturally eliminated over the course of several months providing a trimmer and more defined figure. CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared, and backed by numerous clinical studies confirming its’ safety and effectiveness at reducing fat from the body without the need for surgery, incisions or downtime. This minimally-invasive body contouring procedure has quickly become the number one fat reduction treatment worldwide with over 13 million CoolSculpting procedures performed.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

Many years ago, scientists at Harvard University discovered that some children who sucked on popsicles would later develop dimples in their cheeks. It was observed that the cooling from the popsicles was freezing and eliminating small pockets of fat cells in their cheeks, which resulted in dimpling. This breakthrough observation was the inspiration behind the idea of cryolipolysis— the scientific term for CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting is a fat reduction procedure, not a weight loss procedure. This means that while you won’t see the numbers drastically drop on the scale after a CoolSculpting procedure, you will be reducing the total amount of fat from your designated treatment areas. Studies have shown that a single CoolSculpting session can reduce the volume of the treated site by 20 to 25 percent per treatment. While you may require multiple treatments of CoolSculpting to meet your cosmetic goals, the gained improvements will be maintained as long as there is not weight gain. CoolSculpting also has the added benefit of being a minimally-invasive, nonsurgical procedure, meaning there is no downtime required after your treatment.

What Areas Can CoolSculpting Treat?

CoolSculpting is an incredibly versatile body contouring treatment that can address a wide range of common problem areas of the body that are prone to storing excess fat. Each treatment will utilize a specially designed hand-piece with unique shape to effectively fit and sculpt the specific trouble spot that is being targeted. CoolSculpting can reduce the amount of stubborn fat in the following areas with beautiful, natural results:

  • Abdomen
  • Side flanks
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Under the buttocks or “banana rolls”
  • Upper arms
  • Submental fullness or “double chin”
  • Back or bra bulges
  • Waist and hips

Am I a Candidate for CoolSculpting?

Ideal candidates for CoolSculpting are those who would like to improve the appearance of their figure due to stubborn, isolated pockets of fat. It is essential to understand, however, that CoolSculpting is not a treatment designed for significant weight loss or addressing obesity. Patients who are already dedicated to a healthy lifestyle and are at or within a reasonable range of their target weight will see the most optimal results from this body contouring procedure. If you are within 20 pounds of your ideal weight, CoolSculpting may be right for you.

CoolSculpting may not be the ideal treatment for you if you plan on becoming pregnant in the near future or have difficulty maintaining a stable weight. Pregnancy or weight gain after your CoolSculpting treatment can inhibit the effects of the procedure. Ideal patients should also have good skin quality and elasticity, as CoolSculpting will not address excess or loose skin.

Additionally, it is also vital that you have enough fat present within your problem areas to undergo a CoolSculpting treatment. Generally speaking, if you are able to pinch or grab the fat in the problem areas, there should be enough fat present for the applicator to adhere to. Our team will help you to determine whether CoolSculpting is the treatment for you during your initial consultation with us. So long as you have realistic expectations for the procedure and are otherwise healthy, CoolSculpting can help you to sculpt the fit body you’ve been working for.

What to Expect From Your CoolSculpting Procedure

Once your candidacy for the procedure has been determined and your treatment areas have been selected, your CoolSculpting appointment will take place in the comfort of a treatment room at U Laser Med Spa. First, our experienced and certified CoolSculpting technician will place a gel pad directly over the skin of your treatment area to provide a protective barrier between the CoolSculpting device and your skin. Next, the CoolSculpting applicator will be placed over the protective pads, and the controlled-cooling will begin.

As the applicator suctions and adheres to your fat, you will feel the temperature start to drop and mild sensations of pulling or tugging on your skin. These sensations are generally well-tolerated and should subside after about ten minutes when the treatment areas have become numb from the cold. Each CoolSculpting treatment area ranges from about 30 minutes to an hour and during this time you are free to relax, catch up on work or even take a nap for the duration of your treatment session.

Once your CoolSculpting session is complete, the applicator device will be detached, and your CoolSculpting technician will perform a short tissue massage on your treatment areas to enhance your overall results. As soon as your appointment is complete, you will be free to continue with your normal day-to-day activities— including working out. Since there no incisions or anesthesia required for CoolSculpting, there is zero downtime during the recovery period.

What to Expect From Your CoolSculpting Results

Immediately following your treatment session, you may experience some mild redness, bruising, soreness or numbness in your treatment areas; however, these side effects are normal and should resolve in several hours or days depending on the extent of your procedure. The results of your treatment will not be immediately apparent, but will gradually improve as your body works to eliminate the targeted fat cells.

While you may begin to see visible improvements to your problem areas in as little as a few weeks, the most dramatic results are usually observed two to three months after your CoolSculpting procedure. Your body will continue to eliminate the treated fat cells and improve in appearance for four to six months after your treatment. Some patients may require two or three treatment sessions in the same area to achieve optimal results.

The results you achieve with CoolSculpting will be long-lasting, though it is essential to understand that any future weight fluctuations will still have an impact on the remaining fat cells in your body. To ensure lasting results, it is critical that patients stay committed to a healthy diet and lifestyle after their CoolSculpting treatments.

CoolSculpting VS. SculpSure

While CoolSculpting works by using cryolipolysis to freeze fat cells, SculpSure is another nonsurgical fat reduction procedure that takes the opposite approach to sculpt and slim the body. SculpSure is the world’s first FDA-approved and non-invasive body contouring treatment to utilize laser-lipolysis; meaning it uses laser energy to heat fat cells under the skin and damage their structural integrity without harming the surrounding tissues. So while CoolSculpting is freezing fat cells to death, SculpSure is heating them to death.

Similar to CoolSculpting, a SculpSure procedure does not require incisions, anesthesia or downtime. During a SculpSure treatment session, light-based energy wavelengths will cycle on and off to intermittently raise the temperature of your fat cells while the surface of your skin is kept cool for your comfort. The treated fat cells will be broken down and eliminated by the body over the course of several months in a manner similar to CoolSculpting. As with CoolSculpting, SculpSure offers short and convenient treatments and in some cases may require several treatment sessions to reach your aesthetic goals.

The candidates for SculpSure are also patients who are troubled by the appearance of stubborn fat pockets. While CoolSculpting requires you to have enough fat in your treatment area for the applicator to suction and adhere, SculpSure has flat applicators that are secured with straps to stay in place, so that treatment areas don’t have to be “pinchable.”

Clinical studies have shown that SculpSure reduces fat cells up to 24 percent from a designated area. As with CoolSculpting, the results will last indefinitely so long as you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. SculpSure may even help with the appearance of excess skin, as heat triggers a healing-response from your body and promotes new collagen production. During your initial consultation, Dr. Umansky will help you to determine which non-invasive fat reduction procedure is right for you and your goals.

Each individual has a set number of fat cells in their body that becomes fixed during their childhood or adolescence. Contrary to popular belief, when you lose or gain weight, you are not actually altering the total number of fat cells in your body. Instead, your existing fat cells will shrink or expand as you lose or gain weight, causing your body to shrink or expand as well. That’s why those pesky trouble spots love to keep returning when you start to put on weight, as the total number of fat cells in those regions does not change through diet and exercise alone.

CoolSculpting is a fat reduction procedure, not a weight loss procedure. This means that while you won’t see the numbers drastically drop on the scale after a CoolSculpting procedure, you will be reducing the total amount of fat cells from your designated treatment areas. CoolSculpting may not be the right treatment for you if you plan on becoming pregnant in the near future or have difficulty maintaining a stable weight.
